I did not expect the backlash I got for a recent post I made on my Facebook page.
I had posted that quail egg is high cholesterol than chicken egg, but
that didn’t go well with the people who hold the belief that quail egg
is the new “miracle food”. It is really disturbing that some people
believe so much in everything they read on the internet, regardless of
the source, and would go to any length to insult anyone who says
something contrary.
Are the claims about quail eggs true? Is quail egg truly better than chicken egg in terms on nutritional composition?
I am a lover of all things natural and organic. Those who know me know that I believe in the healing properties of foods. I understand that some foods are high certain nutrients than others! I believe the foods we eat can keep us healthy or make us sick. But, I get worried, or should I say annoyed, when people begin to prescribe a particular food as the cure for all diseases.
Being a fitness instructor, I come across a lot of people who want to lose weight and some of these people would eat and do anything to shed off a few kilograms, without even thinking about the effect on their overall health. When the story about quail egg being the “cure for all diseases” began to spread, the first I did was to look at the nutrition content of the egg. My initial goal was not to refute the claims, my initial goal was to look at the components that make quail egg such a wonderful food. But, I was disappointed when I couldn’t find any credible research for the claims. As a matter of fact, the few articles that supported the claims were from quail egg farmers and marketers. Another thing I found interesting was that, everyone of them was sharing the same article and there was no single reference, or link to where the purported research was conducted. I also noticed that a certain Nigerian quail egg farmer has put the same article in Vanguard, PMNews, Punch, and Guardian newspapers. Please do a simple Google and see what comes up.
My goal in this article is to compare the nutritional composition of quail egg with that of chicken egg, therefore I’m going to limit my writing to that.
Is quail egg better than chicken egg?
“The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue about it nor to spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight stick along side it”. ~D.L MOODY
Please put aside whatever you have been made to believe about these two eggs, and take a deeper look at the nutritional compositions of both eggs.
No single food provides all the nutrients our bodies need to function well, the key to healthy eating is to eat varieties of real foods. When we learn to eat healthy foods in the right proportion, we wouldn’t be looking for miracles in one single food.
